Insulated coils

In systems which employ an individual coil for each cylinder, the coils can be placed in an insulated cassette with each coil connected directly to its spark plug. This eliminates the necessity for high tension leads and reduces the possibility of voltage leakage.

Sensor inputs to an engine management control module allows the E.C.M. to determine ignition firing order and to set ignition timing according to operating conditions.

Description

The function of an ignition system is to supply the spark plug(s) with the electro-magnetic energy needed to ignite the air-fuel mixture under all operating conditions and throughout the engine speed range. The ignition coils generate the energy for the combustion flame propagation that is critical in helping engine and vehicle manufacturers meet the criteria for engine performance, exhaust emissions, and fuel economy as demanded by most countries today.

Component manufacturers offer a wide range of ignition coils and smart ignition systems in a variety of design packages to help provide stable combustion initiation to help vehicle manufacturers get the best performance possible from their gasoline engines.

These products are available for both traditional port fuel injection and direct injection engines, including lean-burn spray stratified direct injection engines. Mounting of these ignition coil packs can include either pencil coil or plug top coil.

Types of Insulated Coils

At the outset, there are a number of component manufacturers of these systems; you may need to refer to the various manufacturers for specific details of the characteristics or functionality.
